Trail Leader Spotlight: Andrew Hoy
Name: Andrew Hoy
Park Assignment: Dunham and Legacy
What do you love most about FAST?
When I started mountain biking in the early 2000s, "mountain biking" to me was mostly just falling off my Trek 4500 in the construction sites that are now 36th & Alpine. I love that we have many miles of properly built trails in town now, and I love the ripple effect of having so many mountain biking friends to ride with!
What is your favorite park to ride in Sioux Falls?
I live right up the street from Dunham Park, so that's where I ride the most!
Where is the coolest place you’ve ever ridden outside of Sioux Falls?
Whistler! Last summer I spent five days riding the chairlifts at Whistler Bike Park in British Columbia. My favorite trails there were "POLP Fiction" which was full of super technical wooden features, and "C-More" which was a warmup trail for the big jumps on their famous "A-Line."
What do you want FAST members to know about you?
I sold my Nintendo 64 to buy my first "bike shop" mountain bike in 2001... it was the second-best money I've ever spent, behind the hot chocolate I bought my wife Laura on our first date!
If you could only drink one kind of beer for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Corona.... unless 1919 Root Beer counts, in which case I'm definitely changing my answer to that.
What is your favorite piece of riding equipment?
The multi-tool my parents bought for me when I started riding in high school has a lot of sentimental value. It's nothing special but it was all of the bike tools I had for a lot of years, and I still don't own a better chain breaker!
Flats or clipless?
Flats. Definitely flats. Don't look at my feet if you see me on my gravel bike. The answer is flats.
What is the best tip for someone that wants to start riding a mountain bike?
Mountain biking is a state of mind! Ride the bike you already have, whether it's got knobby tires or not. Ride across your lawn, jump a curb, make some skid marks in your driveway, find the FAST trail closest to you and go have fun!
